Moped and Scooter laws in CT – the 5 hp rule

This site is my interpretation of the Connecticut laws concerning mopeds, scooters, motorbikes, and small motorcycles, and is not an official record.

Yamaha RD60 4.9 hp at 8 or 9k rpm, 53 mph, 163 lb

1966 HD M50 clutch, 3 speed 2.5 hp

Several 50cc bikes – such as the Honda MB5, Yamaha YSR50, and Yamaha RX50 –  as classed as “Motorcycles”  since they make over 5 horsepower – so you need registration, title, license plate, insurance, and motorcycle endorsement.

Go-Karts cannot be registered and are prohibited from both roads and sidewalks.

Go-Peds fall under the same provisions as mopeds.

Moped operator 16 or 17 years old – If you are sixteen or seventeen years of age, you must wear a helmet while operating a moped.

Below are bikes that are 5 horsepower or less, so in Connecticut, no registration, title, plates, or motorcycle endorsement are required.
